Celebrating 60 Years of Jack Stack Barbecue

In 1957, the Fiorella family opened Smokestack Barbecue. The Fiorella’s recognized the opportunity to pair world-class, hickory smoked barbecue with high level comfort and service, an unfamiliar concept for Kansas City barbecue at the time. The eldest son, Jack, eventually extended the legacy of remarkable service into Jack Stack Barbecue, which has since grown to five restaurant locations in the KC metro area, plus impressive carryout, shipping and catering divisions. In 60 years, a tiny storefront with five offerings has evolved into a full-scale, full-service barbecue operation – and it’s time to celebrate.

“I grew up with Smokestack/Jack Stack as the "go to place" for our family. My earliest memories were going to Smokestack on Prospect. My Dad, Glen Gamel, is the man that started our love affair with Smokestack/Jack Stack. While dining he would tell us countless stories about how he had a service station down the road and would go there for lunch and order two 69ers for lunch multiple times a week and back then they cost 0.69 cents each. We went there a lot, but also for every birthday, every anniversary and if someone in the family had a hospital stay they knew they were going to be brought a 69er (also known as Smokestack, then Jack Stack). It's funny we all still order the same thing every time we go along with a side of coleslaw and you can't forget the pot of baked beans. My dad will be 84 in October this year and you can bet your bottom dollar he will be taken to Jack Stack for his birthday dinner. I would like to thank your family for bringing so many wonderful memories to our family.” – Glena Kellison

“Being that Jack Stack is our favorite KC BBQ we have many, many fond memories of eating there as well as catered events. We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary there with the family because where else would you go! Yearly we go to the Ozarks to spend time with friends who live there. Our vacation wouldn't be complete unless we brought Jack Stack with us. There is no lake food to compare and our friends love it so we always get extras so they have leftovers. Another fond memory is Jack Stack catering our children's weddings and all the compliments we got on the food. A favorite treat is to surprise out of town guests with what KC BBQ really tastes like. Keep doing what you are doing because you are the only ones who do it right!” – Maureen Nussbeck

“I was born and raised in Chicago, IL and my grandparents always lived in Kansas City. We spent every summer as kids with my grandparents and every trip started with Jack Stack in Martin City. It was my sister and my favorite place to go and after that we would go to the Martin City melodrama. We would make several trips back during our summer stays. Both of my grandparents are deceased, but my mom, myself, husband and two girls often come back to visit. It is the first place we visit and enjoy sometimes twice a day for the week we are there. We have so many wonderful family memories of Jack Stack. It is a family favorite of ours, and will always have a place in our hearts.” – Lauren Turner

“I am from Las Vegas and met my husband there in Kansas City. First thing he said to me was "you have to try Jack Stack" so we ordered it and it was the best food I've ever tasted. We since then have ordered multiple times and now that I live here I send my family back home Jack Stack. Now whenever someone comes to visit we make it a point to go to Jack Stack and I always talk them into the crown beef rib, it's the best! We have made many unforgettable memories with you guys and I thank you for that!” – Brooke Daugherty

“I came to Kansas City in the late 70's. I quickly discovered barbeque and Jack Stack has always been my favorite. A friend of mine from New York came out last year, and we took him out for his birthday. Last October I decided for my 65th birthday we would celebrate at the Jack Stack in Martin City. I invited close family and friends. It was fantastic as usual.” – Jan Rosenblum
